Carer Wins Award for the Best Care Given

July 17, 2009

Carer Gwen Davison from Hillcrest Care Home in Alnwick was awarded the Northumberland Carers Award 2009 after being nominated by a resident's family member.

Gwendoline Davison was awarded the Carers Northumberland Award after she was nominated by Alan and Sheila Armstrong.  Sheila Armstrong is a resident in Hillcrest Care Home in Alnwick and she and her husband were so impressed with the care that Gwen gives that they wanted to nominate her for this award.

Alan Armstrong says: "It gave me great pleasure to nominate Gwen for a Carers Northumberland Award. She has a charming smile and demeanour and has shown warmth, kindness, and loving care to my wife, which has helped me in many ways to come to terms with what to me, was the hardest decision of my life; to place my wife in care. This award is fully deserved and may I take this opportunity to wish Gwen a full and very happy retirement. "

Gwen Davison has worked at Hillcrest Care Home since the 1st of August 1995. Prior to this she was a housewife caring for her three boys and her mother-in-law.  After her mother-in-law passed away, she felt a void in her life and applied for a care assistant's job at Hillcrest Care Home. Over the pursuing years she gained her qualifications in care to enable her to deliver a high quality of care services. Her heart has always remained firmly in providing holistic care to others and she was always there to help new or young carers when needed.

As well as working as a carer, Gwen is also the homes personal and qualified hairdresser and on Wednesdays she and the residents gather together for a day of beauty therapy.

Hillcrest Care Home is one of 23 Care Homes owned and operated by the Executive Care Group.

Gloria Patrick, Manager for Hillcrest Care Home says: "Gwen has always enjoyed her role at Hillcrest and is loved by the residents, their families and staff. She is always willing to do that little bit extra and can somehow find anything that is lost. I don't know how she possesses that ability but she is our lost and found officer and a notorious hoarder.  We will miss her greatly when she retires in August."
