Happy 100th Birthday to Irene at Branthwaite

A day filled with celebration and memories as Irene reaches the milestone.

Former Workington Mayoress Irene Gilmore, resident of Branthwaite Care Home in Workington, Cumbria celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends on 23rd November 2009 with a party and entertainment.

After starting her day with a telegram from the Queen, Irene also had visitors which included the Mayor and Mayoress of Workington, Mr and Mrs Bill Reville. Irene, whose husband David was Mayor between 1965 and 1966 said she was delighted to reach triple figures! She added, "I am so pleased that I am able to say that I have done it. It is a fantastic achievement to get this far. Hopefully I will have many years left in me." Irene and husband David enjoyed ballroom dancing, and were the founding members of the Workington Ramblers Club.

Irene worked as a florist in a shop on Murray Road and has three children, Irene 72, Jean 66 and David 61, has four grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren. Daughter Jean said, "Her enthusiasm for life is infectious and I am so proud that she has made it to 100."

Councillor Reville remarked, "I was delighted to be invited to Irene's party because she has been such an influential person in this town."

Congratulations Irene, and here's to health and happiness in the years to come!
